Identiteettihäviö

Identiteettihäviö refers to a state of profound disruption or loss of one's sense of self. This can manifest in various ways, affecting an individual's perception of who they are, their personal history, their values, and their relationships. It is not a formal medical diagnosis in itself but rather a descriptive term that can be associated with a range of psychological conditions and life experiences.

This phenomenon can arise from traumatic events, such as severe accidents or violence, which can fragment memories and self-perception. Mental health conditions like dissociative disorders, schizophrenia, or severe depression can also lead to significant identity confusion or a feeling of being disconnected from oneself. Furthermore, major life transitions, such as extreme loss, prolonged isolation, or significant cultural displacement, can challenge and destabilize an individual's identity.

Symptoms of identiteettihäviö might include amnesia for personal events, a feeling of unreality or detachment from one's body or surroundings, confusion about one's roles and relationships, and a loss of personal narrative or life goals. Individuals experiencing this may feel lost, empty, or as if they are merely an observer of their own life.
