Icenorum

Icenorum refers to the Iceni, an ancient British tribe who inhabited what is now Norfolk in eastern England. The Iceni are primarily known through Roman historical accounts, particularly the writings of Tacitus. They were a significant Celtic tribe during the Iron Age and the early Roman occupation of Britain.

The Iceni famously revolted against Roman rule in 60 or 61 CE. This rebellion was led by Queen Boudica, following the death of her husband, Prasutagus, the Iceni king, and the brutal treatment of her and her daughters by Roman officials. The revolt saw the destruction of Roman settlements, including Londinium (London), Camulodunum (Colchester), and Verulamium (St Albans). Despite initial successes, the Iceni forces were ultimately defeated by the Roman governor Gaius Suetonius Paulinus.

Following the suppression of the revolt, the Iceni territory was integrated more firmly into the Roman province of Britannia. While their political independence was lost, the Iceni people continued to exist, and their culture blended with Roman influences. Archaeological evidence from the Iceni region includes burial sites, settlements, and coinage, which provide insights into their society, economy, and interactions with the Romans. The Iceni remain a prominent example of British resistance to Roman conquest.
