ISOContainern

ISOContainern are standardized intermodal shipping containers used for the storage and transport of goods, designed to be transferred between ships, trucks, and trains with minimal handling. They are built to international ISO standards to ensure interchangeability and durability across the global logistics system.

Design and dimensions: The most common ISOContainern are dry containers available in 20-foot and 40-foot lengths, with widths around 2.44 meters and heights around 2.59 meters. High-cube variants add an extra foot of height. Optional types include open-top, open-side, flat rack, and refrigerated (reefer) containers, as well as tank containers for liquids. All share standardized end-corner fittings that allow stacking and connection to handling gear and chassis.

Standards and naming: ISO 668 covers the exterior dimensions and rating of containers, while ISO 1496-1 defines general purpose containers. Corner fittings comply with ISO 1161. Containers are typically identified by unique codes under ISO 6346, including owner code, equipment category, and serial number, plus maintenance and inspection marks.

Types and usage: Dry cargo containers are the most common; reefer containers include built-in refrigeration units for temperature-controlled goods. Flat-rack and open-top variants handle oversized or awkward cargo. Tank containers (ISO tanks) carry liquids or gases. ISOContainern enable seamless transfer among ships, rail, and road, supporting standardized palletization and loading procedures.

History: The standardization of intermodal containers began in the mid-20th century, culminating in ISO specifications that enabled rapid containerization of global trade and the development of modern supply chains.
