ISOContainer

ISOContainer is the generic name for the family of ISO standard intermodal freight containers used to move goods globally. These containers are designed for use across ships, rail, and trucks, and for intermodal transfer without reorganization of the cargo. Standardization allows interchange among carriers and terminals, facilitating efficient handling, secure stacking, and predictable capacity.

Sizes and configurations vary, but the most common exterior dimensions are 20-foot and 40-foot lengths, with 8-foot width and 8-foot 6-inch standard height. High-cube variants add another foot in height, yielding approximately 9-foot 6-inch exterior height. There are also 10-, 45-, and 53-foot options used in various markets. The containers are typically constructed of steel, sometimes aluminum for lightweight or specialized use, and feature rigid frames and corner fittings. The corners provide standardized points for twistlocks and lashing to allow safe stacking and secure transport on ships, trains, and trucks. Refrigerated (reefer) versions include insulation and a built-in refrigeration unit for temperature-controlled cargo.

Key ISO standards include ISO 668 (dimensions and tolerances), ISO 1161 (corner fittings), and ISO 1496 (general-purpose containers). A CSC safety plate is usually applied to demonstrate compliance with the International Convention for Safe Containers, with periodic inspections and maintenance required.

Usage: ISOContainer is the backbone of modern global trade, enabling multi-modal cargo movement, rapid loading and unloading, and standardized handling. They are used for fast-moving consumer goods, bulk cargo in unitized loads, and for on-site storage or temporary housing.
