ISOABNT

ISOABNT is a proposed collaborative framework between the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the Associação Brasileira de Normas Técnicas (ABNT). It aims to harmonize Brazilian technical standards with ISO standards, facilitate the adoption of international norms in Brazil, and promote mutual recognition of conformity assessment where appropriate.

Originally conceived to strengthen Brazil's integration into international markets, ISOABNT focuses on alignment of terminology, translation of standards, and joint development of normative documents. The framework is not a separate standard; rather, it is a mechanism that supports joint work conducted by ISO committees and ABNT technical bodies.

Key activities include the creation of joint technical committees, coordinated review of ISO standards for Brazilian applicability, translation and publication of ISO texts in Portuguese, and the incorporation of ISO-based references into national standards (NBRs). The program also supports capacity building and awareness campaigns to help industry and government apply standardized practices.

ISOABNT promotes export readiness for Brazilian products, helps align regulatory requirements, and reduces duplicative efforts across institutions. Governance typically involves a joint secretariat, rotating leadership between ISO and ABNT representatives, and working groups addressing sectors such as manufacturing, construction, and services.

Because ISOABNT is a collaborative framework rather than a separate specification standard, its outputs are typically adopted through national norms (NBRs) and related conformity assessment activities in Brazil.
