ISBNnumerointia, or ISBN numbering, is a unique commercial book identifier. The International Standard Book Number (ISBN) is a 10- or 13-digit number that distinctly identifies a book. It's crucial for the book trade and allows for easier management of book sales, inventory, and ordering. Each ISBN is assigned to a specific edition and format of a book, such as a hardcover, paperback, or e-book. This ensures that different versions of the same work are distinguishable.

The ISBN system was developed in the United Kingdom by David Whitaker in 1965 and later adopted internationally as ISO 2108. Initially, it was a 10-digit system, but due to the increasing number of published books, it was expanded to a 13-digit system in 2007. The 13-digit ISBN often starts with a prefix of 978 or 979, which is a GS1 Company Prefix. The structure of an ISBN includes a group identifier (language or country), a publisher identifier, a title identifier, and a check digit. The check digit is a single digit calculated using a specific algorithm, which helps to detect errors in ISBN transcription. Publishers, distributors, and booksellers rely heavily on ISBNs for accurate cataloging and efficient transaction processing.
