IRtermomeetrid

IRtermomeetrid, or infrared thermometers, are devices that measure the surface temperature of objects without contact by detecting infrared radiation they emit. They are widely used in medical, industrial, and consumer applications because they provide rapid temperature readings and keep the user at a safe distance from the object.

Operating principle is based on detecting infrared energy with a sensor such as a thermopile or pyroelectric detector. The collected radiation is focused by a lens onto the sensor, converted into an electrical signal, and processed to display a temperature value. Calibration accounts for the emissivity of the surface being measured, and many models allow the user to adjust emissivity to improve accuracy for different materials.

Key specifications include the distance-to-spot ratio (D:S), which describes the area measured at a given distance; higher D:S values allow measuring smaller targets from further away. Typical measurement ranges span from well below freezing to several hundred degrees Celsius, with accuracy commonly cited as a few tenths to a few percent or a few degrees, depending on the model. Response times can be very fast, sometimes under a second.

Applications cover many domains: medical screening and fever checks; building diagnostics such as detecting heat loss or insulation gaps; electrical and mechanical maintenance; HVAC system troubleshooting; and food safety where surface temperature is important. Limitations include sensitivity to surface emissivity and reflectivity, interference from ambient light or transparent materials, and the fact that infrared thermometers measure surface rather than internal temperature. Proper use involves selecting appropriate emissivity, maintaining proper distance, and correlating readings with known references when possible.
