IPv6yhteyksiä refers to internet connections that utilize the IPv6 protocol. IPv6, or Internet Protocol version 6, is the successor to IPv4, designed to address the depletion of IPv4 addresses and offer improvements in network efficiency and security.

The primary motivation behind IPv6 is its vastly expanded address space. While IPv4 uses 32-bit addresses, resulting in approximately 4.3 billion unique addresses, IPv6 uses 128-bit addresses. This provides an astronomical number of addresses, estimated to be around 340 undecillion, effectively ensuring that every connected device can have a unique public IP address. This eliminates the need for Network Address Translation (NAT) in many scenarios, simplifying network configurations and potentially improving performance.

IPv6 also introduces several other enhancements over IPv4. These include a more efficient header format, which can lead to faster routing of packets. It also incorporates built-in security features, such as native support for IPsec (Internet Protocol Security), which provides authentication and encryption for data transmission. Furthermore, IPv6 simplifies network management through features like stateless address autoconfiguration, allowing devices to obtain an IP address without the need for a DHCP server.

The transition to IPv6 is an ongoing process. While many modern operating systems and network devices support IPv6, widespread adoption by internet service providers and content providers is still developing. Dual-stack implementations, where devices and networks can simultaneously support both IPv4 and IPv6, are common during this transition period. As more of the internet migrates to IPv6, users will increasingly benefit from its expanded address space and improved network capabilities.
