IPdatagrammeja

IPdatagrammeja is the plural form used in some contexts to refer to IP datagrams, the fundamental units of data in the Internet Protocol (IP). An IPdatagrammeja is a self-contained packet that is routed independently through an IP network, containing a header and a payload.

In IPv4, an IPdatagrammeja can carry up to 65,535 bytes, including the header. The IPv4 header includes fields such as version, header length (IHL), DSCP/ECN, total length, identification, flags, fragment offset, time to live (TTL), and protocol, along with source and destination addresses and optional fields. The payload carries the upper-layer datagram, such as a TCP segment or a UDP datagram. The header length is variable to accommodate options when present.

In IPv6, the header is fixed at 40 bytes and contains version, traffic class, flow label, payload length, next header, hop limit, and the source and destination addresses. IPv6 does not perform fragmentation in routers; fragmentation is typically handled by the source with an extension header when necessary, aided by Path MTU Discovery. The payload carries the rest of the datagram, including upper-layer data.

IPdatagrammeja are delivered by routers using a best-effort service, with no inherent guarantees of delivery, order, or integrity. Reliability and ordering are provided by higher-layer protocols such as TCP. In IPv4, datagrams may be fragmented by routers and reassembled at the destination; fragmentation adds processing overhead and can increase the risk of loss. Overall, IPdatagrammeja are the primary carriers of data across IP networks, shaping how data is segmented, routed, and delivered.
