IP Addressing Plans are systematic approaches to assigning and managing IP addresses within a network. The primary goal is to ensure efficient utilization of the limited IP address space and to facilitate network organization and management. These plans are crucial for both private and public networks, dictating how devices acquire and use IP addresses.

Commonly, IP addressing plans involve dividing a network into subnets, each with its own range of IP addresses. This allows for better traffic control, security, and troubleshooting. For private networks, organizations typically use private IP address ranges (e.g., 10.0.0.0/8, 172.16.0.0/12, 192.168.0.0/16) which are not routable on the public internet and are managed internally through protocols like DHCP.

Public IP addresses, on the other hand, are globally unique and assigned by Internet Service Providers (ISPs) or Regional Internet Registries (RIRs). The transition from IPv4 to IPv6 has significantly impacted IP addressing plans due to the vastly larger address space available with IPv6, aiming to resolve the scarcity issues of IPv4.
