IEDdirektiivin

IEDdirektiivi, officially Directive 2010/75/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council of 24 November 2010 on industrial emissions (integrated pollution prevention and control), is a key piece of European Union legislation aimed at controlling pollution from large industrial installations. It replaces and consolidates several previous directives, including those on integrated pollution prevention and control (IPPC), large combustion plants, and waste incineration. The primary goal of the IEDdirektiivi is to achieve a high level of protection for the environment and human health by requiring installations to operate using the best available techniques (BAT).

The directive covers a wide range of industrial activities, from energy production and manufacturing to waste treatment and intensive farming. It mandates that operators of these installations obtain permits that set emission limit values based on BAT. BAT are defined as the most effective and advanced stage in the development of activities and their methods of operation, indicating the techniques best suited to preventing and, where that is not practicable, reducing emissions and the impact on the environment as a whole. Member states are responsible for transposing the directive into their national laws and for ensuring its enforcement. The directive also includes provisions for public participation in decision-making processes related to industrial permits and sets requirements for monitoring and reporting of emissions.
