IBANmuodossa refers to presenting a bank account number in the International Bank Account Number (IBAN) format. The IBAN is used to identify bank accounts for cross-border payments and is defined by international standards (ISO 13616) and the SEPA framework. An IBAN consists of a two-letter country code, two check digits, and a country-specific Basic Bank Account Number (BBAN). The total length varies by country but may not exceed 34 characters.

The BBAN portion encodes domestic bank data such as the bank identifier, branch, and the account number. Because the BBAN structure differs between countries, the exact arrangement of elements varies, while the overall form remains a single continuous string of alphanumeric characters.

Validation and error-detection rely on the two check digits. To validate an IBAN, the country code and check digits are moved to the end, letters are converted to digits (A=10, B=11, …, Z=35), and the resulting number is tested with a mod-97 operation; a valid IBAN yields a remainder of 1. This mechanism helps detect common transcription and transmission errors.

Usage and formatting: IBANs are used for domestic and international transfers, especially within SEPA, to streamline payments and reduce misrouting. For readability, IBANs are often written with spaces every four characters, e.g., DE89 3704 0044 0532 0130 00, though spaces are optional for processing. When entering an IBAN in a form, spaces should be removed before validation or transmission.
