IAVCEI

International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth’s Interior (IAVCEI) is a global scientific association dedicated to studying volcanoes and the chemistry of the Earth’s interior. It is one of the associations of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG). The organization’s aims include advancing understanding of volcanic processes, eruption dynamics, magma genesis and transport, volcanic gases and their effects on the atmosphere, and the hazards associated with volcanic activity; promoting collaboration among scientists, institutions, and governments; and supporting education and outreach.

IAVCEI organizes international activities such as the IAVCEI Congress, as well as topical symposia, field schools, and training opportunities. It coordinates working groups and commissions on topics including volcanology, volcanogenic hazards and risk, monitoring and alert systems, geochemistry of magmas, and planetary volcanology, fostering cross-disciplinary research.

The association has a governance structure based on an elected executive committee and president, with representation from researchers worldwide. Members come from universities, research institutes, and government agencies. IAVCEI also publishes and endorses scientific journals, reports, and online resources; its long-standing journal is the Bulletin of Volcanology, and the organization maintains documentation and data resources to support research and hazard assessment.

Through its activities, IAVCEI seeks to advance scientific knowledge about volcanic processes and to translate findings into risk mitigation, public communication, and policy-relevant guidance. It serves as a global network connecting volcanology and earth interior geochemistry communities, encouraging interdisciplinary approaches from magma genesis to eruption dynamics and their environmental impacts.
