Højkontekstkommunikation is a communication style where much of the meaning is conveyed through the context rather than explicit verbal messages. In high-context cultures, people tend to rely heavily on implicit understanding and assume a great deal of shared knowledge between communicators. Directness is often avoided, and messages may be layered with implied meanings. Misunderstandings can arise if individuals from different cultural backgrounds, with differing communication styles, interact without awareness of these distinctions.

Conversely, lavkontekstkommunikation relies more on explicit verbal messages. In low-context cultures, communication is typically direct, clear, and unambiguous. Information is conveyed through words, and less emphasis is placed on non-verbal cues or shared background knowledge. This style prioritizes clarity and efficiency in conveying information. The distinction between high and low context is a spectrum, and most societies fall somewhere in between. Understanding this concept is crucial for effective intercultural communication, as it helps individuals interpret messages more accurately and avoid misinterpretations that can stem from differing communication norms.
