Höyrytyskori

Höyrytyskori, often translated as a steamer basket, is a kitchen utensil used for steaming food. It typically consists of a perforated container, usually made of metal or bamboo, designed to hold food above boiling water. The perforations allow steam to circulate freely, cooking the food gently and evenly.

These baskets are commonly used in Asian cuisine, particularly for preparing dumplings, vegetables, fish, and buns. Metal steamer baskets are often collapsible, making them easy to store, and they can be used with various pots and pans. Bamboo steamers, on the other hand, are traditional and are frequently stacked to steam multiple layers of food simultaneously.

The steaming process is considered a healthy cooking method as it preserves nutrients and flavors that might be lost through boiling or frying. It requires minimal added fat and results in tender, moist food. When using a höyrytyskori, the food is placed inside, and the basket is then positioned over a pot containing a small amount of simmering water. The lid of the pot traps the steam, enveloping the food and cooking it through. After use, steamer baskets are usually cleaned by hand to maintain their integrity, especially bamboo models.
