Höyrynpuriste
Höyrynpuriste is a Finnish term that translates to "steam press" or "steam bender" in English. It refers to a device or technique used in woodworking to shape wood using steam. The process involves exposing wood, typically a thin strip or plank, to steam. This saturates the wood fibers, making them more pliable and flexible. Once the wood is sufficiently steamed, it can be bent around a form or jig to achieve a desired curve. As the wood cools and dries, it retains the new shape. Höyrynpuriste can be a simple setup involving a steam generator and a bending form, or a more complex industrial machine. This method is particularly useful for creating curved components in furniture making, boat building, and musical instrument construction, where precise and strong curves are required. The steam allows for tighter bends without breaking the wood fibers, which would be difficult or impossible to achieve with dry bending. The duration of steaming and the type of wood used are critical factors in achieving successful results. Different wood species will respond to steam bending differently.
