Höyryjyräys

Höyryjyräys is a Finnish term that translates to "steamrolling" and typically refers to the use of steam-powered rollers for road construction and maintenance. These machines were prominent in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Steam rollers worked by utilizing the weight of the machine and the heat generated by the steam engine to compact soil, gravel, and asphalt, creating smoother and more durable road surfaces.

The process involved heating water in a boiler to produce steam, which then powered the engine and drove the heavy rollers. The immense weight of the steam roller was key to its effectiveness in compacting materials. Early steam rollers were cumbersome and slow, requiring significant labor for operation and maintenance.
