Höyhentyyppejä refers to the different types of feathers found on birds. These specialized structures play crucial roles in insulation, flight, display, and waterproofing. Feathers are broadly categorized into several main types.

Down feathers are soft, fluffy, and lack a central shaft or vane. They are located close to the skin and provide excellent thermal insulation, trapping air to keep the bird warm. Chicks are often covered in a layer of down.

Contour feathers are the most visible type and cover the body of the bird, giving it its characteristic shape. They have a stiff central shaft called a rachis and a flattened vane made of interlocking barbs. These feathers provide streamlining for flight and protection. Flight feathers, a subset of contour feathers, are found on the wings and tail and are highly specialized for generating lift and thrust.

Filoplume feathers are very fine and hair-like, with a few barbs at the tip. They are interspersed among other feathers and are thought to have a sensory function, helping birds monitor the position and tension of their other feathers.

Bristle feathers are stiff and bristle-like, often found around the eyes, mouth, and nostrils. They may function as filters, protect sensitive areas, or aid in catching insects.

Semicontour feathers are intermediate between down and contour feathers, with a less developed vane. They contribute to insulation and the overall body contour. The diversity of feather types and their arrangements are key adaptations that allow birds to thrive in a wide range of environments.
