Höftleder

Höftleder is a Swedish term that translates to "hip joint" in English. It refers to the articulation between the femur, or thigh bone, and the pelvis. This ball-and-socket joint is one of the largest and most robust joints in the human body, essential for weight-bearing and mobility. The rounded head of the femur fits into a cup-shaped socket in the pelvis called the acetabulum.

The hip joint is surrounded by a capsule and supported by strong ligaments and muscles, which allow for a wide range of motion, including flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, internal rotation, and external rotation. This extensive movement capability is crucial for activities such as walking, running, and squatting. The smooth articular cartilage covering the bone surfaces within the joint reduces friction and allows for effortless gliding.

Problems with the höftleder can arise from various conditions. Arthritis, particularly osteoarthritis, is a common cause of pain and stiffness, characterized by the gradual degeneration of the articular cartilage. Hip fractures, often occurring due to falls, are serious injuries that can significantly impair mobility. Other issues include hip dysplasia, a congenital condition where the acetabulum does not fully cover the femoral head, and bursitis, inflammation of the fluid-filled sacs that cushion the joint. Treatment for höftleder problems ranges from conservative measures like physical therapy and medication to surgical interventions such as hip replacement.
