Höftkirurgi, or hip surgery, refers to a range of surgical procedures performed on the hip joint. The most common type is hip replacement surgery, which involves replacing the damaged or diseased parts of the hip joint with artificial components, often made of metal and plastic. This procedure is typically performed to alleviate pain and restore mobility in individuals suffering from severe osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or hip fractures.

Another significant category of hip surgery addresses fractures. Hip fractures often occur due to falls, especially in older adults with weakened bones. Treatment can involve surgical repair using plates, screws, or rods to stabilize the broken bone, or in severe cases, a hip replacement may be necessary.

Other hip surgeries include arthroscopy, a minimally invasive technique used to diagnose and treat various hip conditions such as labral tears, impingement, and removal of bone spurs. Procedures to correct hip dysplasia, a condition where the hip socket doesn't fully cover the ball portion of the upper thighbone, are also performed, particularly in younger patients.

The decision to undergo hip surgery is usually based on the severity of pain, functional limitations, and the failure of conservative treatments like medication or physical therapy. Recovery times vary depending on the specific procedure and the individual patient's health, but often involve a period of rehabilitation to regain strength and mobility. Complications, though uncommon, can include infection, blood clots, or loosening of the artificial joint.
