Hõbejoodiidi, also known as silver iodide (chemical formula AgI), is a chemical compound composed of silver and iodine. It is primarily used as a cloud seeding agent in weather modification efforts, particularly to induce precipitation in areas experiencing drought or to suppress hail formation. The compound is effective because its crystalline structure resembles that of ice, allowing it to serve as a nucleation site for water droplets to freeze and form ice crystals, which can grow into precipitation.

Silver iodide is typically dispersed into the atmosphere using aircraft or ground-based generators. When released into supercooled clouds (clouds with temperatures below freezing but still in liquid form), the AgI particles encourage the formation of ice nuclei, promoting the development of rain or snow. This technique has been employed in various regions worldwide, including the United States, China, and Russia, though its effectiveness and long-term environmental impacts remain subjects of scientific debate.

Beyond weather modification, silver iodide has historical applications in photography as a light-sensitive material.
