Härterprozess is a German term that translates to "hardening process" in English. It refers to a variety of thermal or thermochemical treatments applied to metals, primarily steels, to increase their hardness and strength. This is achieved by altering the microstructure of the material.

The most common type of Härterprozess is hardening by quenching. This involves heating the metal to a specific temperature above its critical point, where its crystal structure transforms. Then, it is rapidly cooled in a quenching medium such as water, oil, or air. This rapid cooling traps the material in a hard, brittle phase called martensite.

Another important process is case hardening, also known as surface hardening. This method aims to harden only the outer layer or "case" of a metal part while leaving the core relatively soft and tough. Common case hardening techniques include carburizing, nitriding, and induction hardening. Carburizing involves diffusing carbon into the surface of low-carbon steel at high temperatures, followed by quenching. Nitriding introduces nitrogen into the surface, forming hard nitrides. Induction hardening uses electromagnetic induction to rapidly heat the surface layer, which is then quenched.

Tempering is often performed after hardening to reduce the brittleness and increase the toughness of the metal. This involves reheating the hardened material to a temperature below its critical point and then cooling it, typically in air. The specific tempering temperature and time determine the final hardness and toughness balance.

The Härterprozess is crucial for manufacturing components that require high wear resistance, strength, and durability, such as gears, tools, bearings, and engine parts. The precise parameters of the process are critical and depend on the specific alloy and desired properties.
