Hyötyteoria

Hyötyteoria, often translated as utility theory, is a concept in economics and decision theory that attempts to model how individuals make choices when faced with different outcomes that have varying levels of desirability. It posits that individuals choose the option that maximizes their expected utility. Utility itself is a measure of the satisfaction or benefit that a person derives from a particular good, service, or outcome.

There are two main branches of utility theory: cardinal utility and ordinal utility. Cardinal utility theory assumes that utility can be measured quantitatively, meaning one can assign numerical values to different levels of satisfaction and compare them directly. For example, one could say that a certain outcome provides 10 units of utility, while another provides 5. Ordinal utility theory, which is more widely accepted in modern economics, does not require such precise measurement. Instead, it assumes that individuals can rank their preferences. They know which outcome they prefer over another, but they don't necessarily know by how much.

Hyötyteoria is fundamental to understanding consumer behavior, risk assessment, and decision-making under uncertainty. It helps explain why people might choose a certain investment over another, or why they might buy insurance despite the upfront cost. The theory is often represented mathematically using utility functions, which map outcomes to utility values. Despite its widespread use, utility theory has also faced criticism, particularly regarding the rationality assumptions it often makes about human decision-making.
