In agile development methodologies, acceptance criteria are typically written from the perspective of the end-user and are often framed as a series of "Given-When-Then" statements. This format clearly outlines the initial state, the action performed, and the expected outcome. For instance, a "Given a user is logged in, When they click the 'add to cart' button, Then the item should appear in their shopping cart" clearly communicates the expected behavior.

The process of defining acceptance criteria involves collaboration between the product owner, the development team, and sometimes other stakeholders. They are established during the sprint planning or backlog refinement process. Well-defined acceptance criteria serve as a shared understanding of what needs to be built, reducing ambiguity and preventing scope creep.
