Hypoteesitestausta, often translated as hypothesis testing, is a fundamental statistical method used to make inferences about populations based on sample data. The core of hypothesis testing involves collecting sample data and calculating a test statistic. This statistic summarizes the sample information in relation to the null hypothesis. Conversely, a large p-value suggests that the data are consistent with the null hypothesis, and it is not rejected.

Common types of hypothesis tests include t-tests, z-tests, chi-squared tests, and F-tests, each suited for different types of data and research questions. Hypothesis testing is widely applied in various fields, including science, medicine, economics, and social sciences, to draw conclusions and support or refute theories. It is important to note that hypothesis testing does not prove the alternative hypothesis; rather, it provides evidence to reject the null hypothesis.
