Hyperschalltec is a German engineering company specialising in hypersonic propulsion and vehicle design. The company was founded in 2014 as a spin‑off from the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and is headquartered in Munich, with an additional research facility in Berlin. Hyperschalltec’s mission is to develop reusable hypersonic systems that can travel at speeds above Mach 5 for rapid global reach and for defence applications.

The firm operates a multidisciplinary team of aerospace engineers, materials scientists and propulsion specialists. Its core research programmes focus on scramjet engines, plasma‑based thrust augmentation, and lightweight structural composites that can withstand the extreme temperatures of hypersonic flight. In 2017 Hyperschalltec entered a joint venture with Airbus Defence and Space to develop a short‑range air‑to‑air interceptor capable of Mach 6 flight.

Since 2018 Hyperschalltec has completed a series of wind‑tunnel tests, achieving stable supersonic airflow at Mach 4.1. The “HVC‑1” test vehicle, powered by a hybrid propulsion system, successfully flew a 12‑minute trajectory in 2021. Funding for these projects comes from the German Federal Ministry of Defence and a consortium of European Research Council grants under Horizon Europe.

Hyperschalltec is actively collaborating with universities such as the Technical University of Munich and the University of Stuttgart, providing internship opportunities for students in aerospace engineering. The company’s work is regarded as a key contribution to the European hypersonic technology corridor and is cited in reports analysing future trends in air and space mobility.
