A hydrocyclone, also known as a cyclone separator, is a mechanical device that separates particles from a liquid or gas based on their size and density. It works by introducing the fluid containing the particles into a conical chamber at a high velocity. This creates a vortex, where denser and larger particles are forced towards the outer wall and descend into an underflow outlet, while lighter or smaller particles are carried towards the center and exit through an overflow outlet.

Hydrocyklonbaserad applications are diverse and found in various industries. In mining and mineral processing, they are used for classifying, desliming, and dewatering slurries. For instance, they can separate fine coal from coarser particles or remove fine clay particles from sand.
