The primary function of hydraulic oil is to act as a medium for transferring pressure from one point to another.

Beyond power transmission, hydraulic oils serve several other crucial roles. Key characteristics include viscosity, which describes its resistance to flow; viscosity index, indicating how much viscosity changes with temperature; pour point, the lowest temperature at which the oil will flow; flash point, the temperature at which vapors can ignite; and oxidation stability, its ability to resist degradation from oxygen. Different applications require hydraulic oils with specific properties tailored to their operating conditions, such as extreme temperatures or high pressures.
