Huvudhus

Huvudhus is a term used in Swedish architectural history and rural planning to denote the main building within a farmstead, manor, or cluster of structures. It functions as the principal residence and administrative center of the property and historically often housed living quarters, the kitchen, and service spaces. The huvudhus is typically located at the core of the gårdsrum (courtyard), with outbuildings such as stables, barns, granaries, and workshops arranged around it.

In historic contexts, the huvudhus was usually a substantial timber-framed structure with plastered or weatherboarded façades. The interior is commonly organized around a central hall or corridor, separating public rooms, such as a reception or parlor, from more private spaces like bedrooms. In earlier centuries, kitchens might be located in a separate wing or annex, with servants’ spaces nearby. Over time, huvudhus often underwent extensions or renovations that reflected changes in domestic life and architectural style.
