Huovutuslajit refers to the various types of felting, a textile technique that involves matting, condensing, and pressing fibers together to create a fabric. This process can be done wet or dry, with each method yielding different results and applications.

Wet felting is the most traditional method and utilizes water and soap to encourage the interlocking of fibers. Wool fibers are particularly well-suited for wet felting due to the microscopic scales on their surface, which open up in the presence of moisture and agitation, allowing them to bond together. This technique is used for creating a wide range of items, from flat decorative pieces and clothing to three-dimensional objects like bags and sculptures. The process involves layering wool, introducing soapy water, and then agitating the fibers through rubbing, rolling, or even by using a washing machine.

Dry felting, also known as needle felting, employs special barbed needles to entangle the fibers. These needles are repeatedly punched through a loose mass of wool, causing the fibers to snag and interlock. Needle felting is ideal for creating detailed sculptural pieces, embellishments, and toys. It offers greater control over shape and form, allowing for intricate designs and fine details that are more challenging to achieve with wet felting. Both wet and dry felting are considered sustainable crafts, often utilizing natural fibers and producing minimal waste.
