Humusartigen

Humusartigen is a German-derived adjective that broadly denotes materials or characteristics that are humus-like—resembling the dark, partially decomposed organic matter found in soils. In soil science the term is used to describe organic residues, layers, or fractions that contribute to soil humus, including colloidal humic substances such as humic acids, fulvic acids and humin.

Formation of humusartigen material results from the breakdown of plant and animal residues by microorganisms and soil fauna. The process produces complex, stable organic molecules that bind to mineral particles and form aggregates. Factors influencing formation include climate, vegetation, moisture, temperature and the activity of decomposers.

Physically and chemically, humus-like material is typically dark brown to black, has high porosity and water retention, and contributes to soil structure. It increases cation exchange capacity, buffers pH, and slowly releases nutrients, improving fertility and plant growth. Because of its complex molecular structure, humus-like carbon is relatively persistent in soils and plays a role in carbon sequestration and greenhouse gas dynamics.

In land management, promoting humusartigen content is a goal of sustainable practices such as adding compost or manure, maintaining cover crops, reduced tillage and diverse crop rotations. In classification and description of soil profiles, careful distinction is made between true peat, undecomposed organic layers and humus-like mineral-organic horizons to guide use, conservation and restoration. The term derives from Latin humus, meaning earth or soil.
