Humanitäres

Humanitäres is the neuter form of the German adjective humanitär and is used to describe concepts, actions, or institutions related to humanitarian aid and protection. It appears mainly in compounds or phrases such as humanitäres Völkerrecht (international humanitarian law) or humanitäres Hilfswerk (a humanitarian aid organization). In many contexts it can also be used as a nominalized form, das Humanitäre, to refer to humanitarian concerns in general. It is not typically used as a standalone noun in everyday language.

Scope and purpose: In practice, the term covers activities aimed at alleviating suffering during armed conflict or natural disasters. This includes delivering food and medical care, providing shelter, and protecting civilians, refugees, and internally displaced persons. It also encompasses facilitating access for aid and ensuring the safety of aid workers.

Legal frame: A central domain is international humanitarian law, the body of rules that regulate conduct during armed conflict and seek to limit its effects. Core instruments include the Geneva Conventions and Additional Protocols, with principles such as distinction, proportionality, and precaution.
