Hovedtrykk

Hovedtrykk is a term used in Norwegian engineering and building services to refer to the primary or main pressure in a fluid system, notably the pressure in the main water supply line or process pipe. It describes the pressure that is available to the distribution network from the source, and is influenced by the height of the fluid column, pumping head, and losses due to friction and fittings.

In water supply, hovedtrykk is the pressure at the service connection to a building or at the start of a distribution network. It is determined by factors such as reservoir level, pump operation, and network design. The concept is essential for ensuring that fixtures and appliances receive sufficient pressure while staying within the safe operating range for pipes and fittings.

Design and safety considerations: Systems are designed with a target hovedtrykk range, and devices such as pressure-reducing valves or pressure relief valves are used to regulate it. Excessive hovedtrykk can cause leaks, pipe bursts, and water hammer; insufficient pressure leads to poor performance of taps and showers. Typical residential service pressures are around 3–4 bar, with maximum allowable pressures commonly up to about 6 bar in many codes, though this varies by jurisdiction.
