Hovedforstærkere, often translated as "main amplifiers" or "power amplifiers," are crucial components in many audio systems. Their primary function is to amplify the low-power audio signal received from a preamplifier or source device to a level sufficient to drive loudspeakers. Without a main amplifier, the audio signal would be too weak to produce audible sound through speakers.

These amplifiers are designed to deliver significant power output, measured in watts. The power rating indicates how much energy the amplifier can supply to the speakers, which directly impacts the volume and dynamic range of the sound produced. Different audio applications require different power levels. For instance, home audio systems might use amplifiers with tens or hundreds of watts, while professional sound systems for concerts or large venues can utilize amplifiers with thousands of watts.

Main amplifiers can be found in various forms, including standalone units, integrated amplifiers (which combine preamplification and power amplification in a single chassis), and built into active loudspeakers. The design and circuitry of a main amplifier greatly influence its sound quality, often characterized by factors like clarity, distortion levels, and frequency response. The efficiency of the amplifier, meaning how much electrical power is converted into audio power versus heat, is also an important consideration.
