Homoclusters, also known as functional clusters or gene families, refer to groups of genes or proteins that share significant sequence similarity, implying a common evolutionary origin and often, but not always, related functions. These similarities arise from gene duplication events, where an original gene is copied, and the copies can then diverge over time, accumulating mutations.

The identification of homoclusters is a cornerstone of bioinformatics and comparative genomics. Tools and algorithms are employed to scan vast genomic databases for genes with homologous sequences. This process typically involves comparing nucleotide or amino acid sequences using methods like BLAST (Basic Local Alignment Search Tool). High similarity scores suggest a shared ancestry.

Understanding homoclusters provides valuable insights into gene evolution and functional conservation. Genes within a homocluster may retain similar biochemical roles, participate in the same biological pathways, or have undergone neofunctionalization where one copy acquires a new function.
