Hommikust

Hommikust is the elative singular form of the Estonian noun hommik, meaning morning. In Estonian grammar, the elative case expresses origin or starting point, which gives hommikust the sense of “from the morning.”

The form is commonly used in time expressions to indicate when something begins or from what point in time it continues. It appears most often in fixed phrases such as hommikust alates or hommikust peale, which correspond to English “from the morning onwards” or “starting in the morning.”

Examples of usage include sentences such as: “Hommikust alates oli linn vaikne,” meaning “From the morning onwards, the town was quiet,” and “Hommikust alates on temperatuur tõusnud,” meaning “From the morning onwards the temperature has risen.” In these phrases, hommikust marks the starting point in time, while the rest of the sentence provides the predicate.

Etymologically, hommikust is formed from hommik with the elative suffix -st. It functions only as a case form within sentences and is not typically used as an independent word outside of such constructs.
