Hoeve

Hoeve is a Dutch term meaning farm or farmstead, typically referring to a rural dwelling and its associated agricultural buildings. In the Netherlands and Dutch-speaking regions of Belgium (Flanders), a hoeve denotes a small to medium-sized, family-operated farm that traditionally produced a mix of crops and livestock. The word is often used for the physical complex rather than the landholding alone and is common in place names and in regional architectural vocabulary.

Historically, hoeves emerged in the medieval and early modern periods as self-sufficient farm units. The core is the farmhouse, with work buildings such as a barn, stable, granary, and sometimes a threshing floor, arranged around a courtyard or along a farmyard. The design varied regionally but often reflected practical access, storage, and protection of livestock and produce.

In architectural terms, a hoeve may be described as a farmstead with a characteristic courtyard plan, sometimes enclosed. Some examples are built in brick or timber framing, and older hoeves may feature low, long houses with a steeply pitched roof. The landscape around hoeves was typically managed through small fields, meadows, and hedgerows.

In modern times, many hoeves have been modernized or repurposed. Some remain working farms; others have been converted into tourist accommodations, farm shops (hoevewinkels), breweries, or cultural heritage sites. The term remains common in regional dialects and in rural toponymy.
