Hiánybetegség, which translates to deficiency disease in English, is a medical condition caused by a lack of one or more essential nutrients in the body. These nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, and macronutrients like proteins, carbohydrates, and fats, are vital for various bodily functions, growth, and development. When the intake of these nutrients falls below the body's requirements for an extended period, a deficiency can occur, leading to a range of health problems.

The severity and specific symptoms of a hiánybetegség depend on which nutrient is deficient and the extent of that deficiency. For example, a lack of vitamin C can lead to scurvy, characterized by fatigue, bleeding gums, and poor wound healing. Iron deficiency results in anemia, causing weakness and shortness of breath.
