Hizlals

Hizlals, also known as Sufi dervishes, are a type of devotional liturgist and Sufi mystic in Turkey and other parts of the Middle East. The Hizla, a mystical gathering and liturgical performance of the whirling dervishes, is an integral part of their devotional practices.

Hizlals are members of the Mevlevi Order, a Sufi brotherhood that emerged in the 14th century in Konya, Turkey. The order was founded by Rumi, also known as Mevlana Rumi, a renowned poet, philosopher, and Islamic mystic. Rumi's teachings emphasize the importance of love, compassion, and spiritual growth, which are central to the Hizla practices.

During a Hizla, Hizlals gather in a mosque or a designated ceremony space, typically seated in a semi-circle. The Hizlals eventually stand up and begin their whirling, a slow and ritualistic dance that is meant to symbolize the Sufi concept of devotion and spinning towards the divine.
