The process of creating a weld joint involves a heat source, such as an electric arc, gas flame, or laser, which melts the edges of the materials being joined. As the molten metal cools, it solidifies, fusing the pieces together. Filler material, in the form of a wire, rod, or powder, may be added to the joint to ensure complete fusion and to provide additional strength. Each joint type has specific advantages and applications.

The integrity of a weld joint is crucial for the safety and performance of the assembled structure or product. Proper design, execution, and inspection are therefore essential. Defects such as porosity, cracks, or lack of fusion can significantly weaken a weld joint and lead to failure. Various non-destructive testing methods, like radiography or ultrasonic testing, are employed to assess the quality of weld joints.
