Hitsaussäteilyltä refers to the radiation emitted during welding processes. This radiation is a form of electromagnetic energy and can encompass a wide spectrum, including visible light, infrared radiation, and ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The intensity and specific wavelengths of this radiation depend on the welding method used, such as arc welding, gas welding, or laser welding, as well as the materials being joined and any shielding gases present.

Visible light emitted during welding is extremely bright and can cause temporary or permanent damage to the eyes if viewed directly. Infrared radiation is primarily associated with heat and can contribute to thermal burns on the skin and eyes. Ultraviolet radiation, while invisible, is particularly hazardous. Exposure to UV radiation from welding can cause acute effects like photokeratitis, commonly known as "welder's flash," which is a painful inflammation of the cornea. Chronic exposure to UV radiation can increase the risk of developing cataracts and skin cancer.

To protect against hitsaussäteilyltä, welders must use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). This includes welding helmets with specialized filter lenses that block harmful UV and infrared rays and reduce the intensity of visible light. Welding gloves, protective clothing made of flame-resistant materials, and sometimes respiratory protection are also essential to shield against other hazards associated with welding. Proper work area ventilation and shielding are also important to minimize exposure for both the welder and bystanders.
