Historiatiedot

Historiatiedot refers to information about past events, people, places or phenomena that is collected, organized and preserved to support historical research, education and cultural heritage work. It includes data about sources, dating, provenance, context and relationships between items, and is produced by archives, libraries, museums, scholarly projects and public databases. In Finnish usage the term is commonly found in archival descriptions and historical databases as the information that enables users to understand what happened, when, where and by whom, and how historical narratives have been constructed.

Key components of historiatiedot include primary sources (such as letters, official records and artifacts), secondary sources (scholarly articles and books), and metadata that describes each item (creator, date, place, format, language). Provenance records track the custody and handling of materials over time, while dating and chronological notes place items in temporal order. Contextual notes, cross-references and statements about reliability or possible biases help users assess interpretation. In digital contexts, historiatiedot also encompass search indexes, links and provenance trails that support reproducibility and discoverability.

Uses and significance include enabling verification and critical interpretation of past events, supporting teaching and public history, and providing transparency about uncertainties. Effective historiatiedot relies on interoperable metadata standards and controlled vocabularies, which facilitate discovery across collections and institutions while preserving the ethical and legal considerations surrounding historical information.

Challenges include gaps in records, biases in sources, conflicting accounts, language barriers and translation issues, as well as preservation, access restrictions, privacy concerns and copyright.
