Histologisten

Histologisten are professionals who study the microscopic structure of tissues. They perform tissue processing, embedding, sectioning, staining, and microscopic analysis to describe tissue organization and to identify cellular changes associated with health and disease. In clinical settings, histologisten support pathologists by preparing biopsy and surgical specimens, applying routine and special stains, and conducting immunohistochemical tests to help reach a diagnosis. In research contexts they prepare samples for studies of development, physiology, and disease mechanisms.

Education and training: Histologisten typically hold a bachelor’s degree in histology, biology, or a related field, with many pursuing advanced qualifications or certifications. Programs cover tissue preservation, embedding, microtomy, staining techniques, microscopy, image analysis, and quality control, as well as biosafety and data management. On-the-job training in laboratory workflows and quality assurance is also common.

Techniques and tools: Core methods include fixation, dehydration, embedding in paraffin, sectioning with a microtome or cryostat, and staining with hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) or special stains. Immunohistochemistry, fluorescence labeling, and, in some cases, electron microscopy are used to identify specific proteins or cellular components. Digital pathology and slide scanners are increasingly used to share and analyze images.

Work settings and impact: Histologisten work in hospital laboratories, university and industry research facilities, and contract research organizations. Their work supports diagnostic workflows, biomedical research, and education by ensuring sample integrity, accurate staining, and reliable data interpretation.
