These experiences are considered a normal part of the sleep onset process and are distinct from dreams, which occur during REM sleep. Hypnagogic experiences are typically brief and can be quite vivid. They are more common in individuals who are overtired or stressed. While generally harmless, they can sometimes be associated with sleep disorders like narcolepsy, where they may occur more frequently or intensely. The term originates from the Greek words "hypnos" meaning sleep and "agogos" meaning bringing on.
