Hinterlüftungssysteme, often referred to as ventilated facades or rainscreen systems, are a method of building construction that creates an air gap between the external cladding and the inner wall structure. This air gap is a crucial component, allowing for natural ventilation. The system typically comprises an outer layer of cladding, a supporting substructure, insulation, and the existing wall.

The primary function of a hinterlüftungssystem is to manage moisture within the building envelope. Rainwater that penetrates the outer cladding is channeled down the air gap and drains away, preventing it from reaching the insulation or the inner wall.
