Highmannosehybrid refers to a category of glycoproteins where the carbohydrate (glycan) portion of the protein contains both high-mannose and complex-type (hybrid) oligosaccharidescharide structures. These glycoproteins are produced through the sequential processing of N-linked glycans in the endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus during protein synthesis.

In the early stages of glycosylation, high-mannose oligosaccharides are added to the protein in the endoplasmic reticulum. These structures consist primarily of mannose residues, often with a core of three mannose units attached to an N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc) disaccharide. If further processing does not occur, the glycan remains in its high-mannose form.

However, in some cases, partial trimming of mannose residues followed by the addition of other sugars—such as N-acetylglucosamine, galactose, or sialic acid—can lead to hybrid-type glycans. These hybrid structures retain some high-mannose characteristics while incorporating complex-type features, such as antennae with terminal sugars like galactose or sialic acid.

Examples include certain secreted proteins, membrane-bound receptors, and enzymes.
