Hexahydropyran

Hexahydropyran, also known as tetrahydropyran or oxane, is a heterocyclic organic compound with the chemical formula C5H10O. It is a six-membered ring containing five carbon atoms and one oxygen atom. In its pure form, hexahydropyran is a colorless liquid with a characteristic odor. It is miscible with water and many organic solvents.

The compound is a saturated cyclic ether. The oxygen atom in the ring gives it some polarity, influencing its solubility and reactivity. Hexahydropyran is relatively stable under normal conditions. It can undergo reactions typical of ethers, such as cleavage under strongly acidic conditions. Industrially, hexahydropyran can be synthesized through the hydrogenation of pyran. It finds applications in the production of certain pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and fragrances. Its presence as a structural motif is also found in various natural products.
