Hexagonaalista

Hexagonaalista is a fictional genus of hexagonally organized microorganisms described in speculative biology and educational fiction. It is used as an example to illustrate hexagonal packing and tessellation at microscopic scales.

The name combines the Dutch adjective hexagonaal (six-sided) with the suffix -ista, common in fictional taxonomic groups. In the internal world of the fiction, Hexagonaalista is placed in the hypothetical family Hexagonaceae, order Hexagonales, within the class Hexaformea of the phylum Planitia.

Organisms range from single cells to loose colonies. Individual cells approximate regular hexagons with a flat, honeycomb-like cell wall. Cell diameters are 2–6 micrometers. Colonies form tessellated sheets that tile surfaces without gaps, giving the appearance of a hexagonal lattice. The cell wall is a composite biopolymer with light-reflective properties under certain wavelengths.

Habitat and ecology: Hexagonaalista are described from temperate coastal sediments and tidal flats in the fictional archipelago of Palenda. They are primarily sessile, attaching to sediments or submerged surfaces. Some colonies are photosynthetic or symbiotic with microalgae, contributing to primary production. Reproduction occurs by budding and fragmentation, enabling rapid colony expansion.

Species in the genus include Hexagonaalista tessellata, which forms dense hexagonal mats; Hexagonaalista hexagonalis, noted for near-perfect hexagonal cells; and Hexagonaalista angulata, which shows angular deviations at colony margins under environmental stress.
