Herringlegemer is a fictional term used in speculative biology and in some fictional atlases to describe a hypothetical marine crustacean that purportedly associates with schooling herrings. The name combines references to herring and leg-like appendages.

Description: In most renderings, herringlegemer is an elongated, eel-like crustacean measuring roughly 15 to 25 centimeters. It bears a flexible exoskeleton with a pale, silvery sheen and a series of overlapping segments. A pair of robust anterior appendages resemble legs and are described as anchored structures used to cling to fish integument or to the surface of a shoal, while numerous ventral limbs enable slow swimming and feeding.

Habitat and distribution: The fictional organism is said to inhabit cold temperate coastal waters of the North Atlantic, often near the upper pelagic zone where herring schools form dense shoals.

Ecology and behavior: Herringlegemer is described as forming loose associations with herring, moving in concert with the school and exploiting hydrodynamic cues. It is considered omnivorous, feeding on zooplankton, detritus, and occasionally small crustaceans dislodged by the shoal.
