Hermomyrkyistä, also known as *Hemlock* in English, refers to a group of highly toxic plants belonging to the genus *Conium* in the family Apiaceae. The most well-known species, *Conium maculatum*, commonly called poison hemlock, has a long history of use in both medicinal and lethal contexts. The plant is native to Europe, North Africa, and western Asia but has been introduced to other regions, including North America.

Poison hemlock is a biennial herb that can grow up to 2.5 meters tall, featuring finely divided leaves and white, umbrella-like flower clusters. All parts of the plant contain toxic alkaloids, particularly coniine, which affects the central nervous system. Ingestion can lead to symptoms such as nausea, muscle weakness, paralysis, and respiratory failure, often resulting in death if untreated.

Historically, poison hemlock played a significant role in ancient Greece. According to legend, it was used to execute Socrates in 399 BCE by administering a hemlock-based poison. The plant’s toxicity has also made it a subject of interest in folklore and herbalism, though modern medicine no longer uses it for therapeutic purposes due to its dangers.

Identifying poison hemlock accurately is crucial, as it can be confused with edible plants like wild carrot (*Daucus carota*). Key distinguishing features include the plant’s hollow stems, purple-spotted stems, and the absence of a distinct carrot-like smell. Due to its lethal nature, handling or consuming hemlock should be avoided, and proper identification by an expert is recommended before approaching any unknown plant.

In addition to *Conium maculatum*, other species in the genus, such as *Conium chaerophylloides*, also exhibit toxic properties, though they are less commonly encountered. Environmental conservation efforts sometimes target poison hemlock to prevent its spread, as it can outcompete native vegetation in certain areas.
